Michael Carter-Williams and Trey Burke Named April NBA Rookies of the Month

Before we count up those Rookie of the Year ballots, there’s one last regular-season honor to bestow: the April Rookies of the Month.

It was the fourth time this season Michael Carter-Williams received the distinction and the third time for Burke. Both players have stood out as rare highlights on teams struggling through their own respective rebuilding processes.

Through eight games in April, Carter-Williams averaged 17.6 points, 7.5 rebounds and 6.4 assists. His production throughout the season has made him the favorite to win ROY honors as well.’s Michael Kaskey-Blomain makes the case:

Carter-Williams’ season was book-ended by impressive home performances, and while his play in-between was far from perfect, there were a lot of positives, and a whole lot of production.

Carter-Williams leads all rookies in points, rebounds, assists, steals, minutes, and double-doubles. That statistical domination alone deserves the award. Carter-Williams was asked to do more, and was statistically better than all other rookies this season.

Burke hasn’t received as many accolades as Carter-Williams, but he’s given Utah Jazz fans reason to hope. He was excellent in April, averaging 15.6 points and nine assists, as he continued to establish himself as more than just a shoot-first point guard.

The sky is the limit for both of these youngsters. As they continue to learn the finer points of running an offense, they’ll grow into even more well-rounded floor generals.

Carter-Williams is especially intriguing given his threat to get a triple-double on any given night. The lowly Philadelphia 76ers will look to build around him, as they collect and develop young talent in hopes of extricating themselves from the pits of the Eastern Conference standings.MCW

Boston Amateur Basketball Club Teams Ranked Top 25 in Nation

BABC Junior and Sophomore teams finish as New England’s top program

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE                                       August 31, 2013

BOSTON, MA – The Boston Amateur Basketball Club (BABC) Junior and Sophomore teams have each been selected to the Final Top 25 teams in the nation for 2013. BABC’s Junior team placed 23rd while the Sophomore team placed 21st in the final rankings, becoming the only New England teams to make the list.  Additionally, BABC is one of only three programs nationally to finish in the top 25 of multiple age-group rankings.

“Our veterans, Bonzie Colson, John Joseph and Tyree Robinson date back to the 6th grade as a group,” said BABC Head Coach Leo Papile. “Those players, along with sophomores Bruce Brown, Terrance Mann and Robert Martin, Jr. that played up during the EYBL season, gave us the depth to accomplish this award.  Our entire 2014 class including Tyler Nelson, Malik James, Nick Cambio and Mike Rodriguez all gave effort that will forever be appreciated. We look forward to 2014 as we feel we can compete for the number one spot in the nation once again.”

The 2013 season saw the BABC Junior team qualify for the Nike Elite Youth Basketball League (EYBL) Finals at the Peach Jam in North Augusta, SC, the club’s 4th straight year reaching the Nike EYBL playoffs.  The Junior team also finished in the Elite 8 of the Amateur Athletic Union (AAU) Gold Super Showcase in Orlando. The BABC Sophomore team reached the Final 4 of the AAU 10th Grade Division 1 National Championships and also finished in the Final 4 of the AAU 10th Grade Super Showcase, both in Orlando.

Established in 1977, the BABC has evolved into one of the most prestigious amateur basketball programs in the country. The club has won 17 National Championships, has been a National Finalist 28 times, reached the National Final Four 39 times, and has garnered 90 New England AAU gold medals.

2012 Veterans Day Classic

It has become tradition that the final lap of the fall AAU schedule be completed at BABC’s Veteran’s Day Classic, and this year’s event was rooted in tradition.  The 21st annual classic celebrated the milestone by returning to two community centers that the program used to call home over 21 years ago when the likes of Patrick Ewing were wearing black and gold, and so the 2012 BABC Veteran’s Day Classic returned to Tobin Community Center and Vine Street Community Center, to host a talented and selective field of New England’s top programs.

BABC alum Rene Castro on his commitment to Butler University

By Brendan Hall |

Worcester Academy senior guard Rene Castro has verbally committed to Butler University for the 2013-14 season, he tweeted earlier tonight.

“Thanks for all of my family and friends who support me I have decided to commit to Butler University to play basketball,” the Milton resident wrote in a tweet tonight.

Castro joins Cushing Academy forward Andrew Chrabascz, a Portsmouth, R.I., native, among the local Class of 2013 products pledging to the Indianapolis school, which is beginning its first season in the Atlantic 10 Conference. Castro and Chrabascz also play for the same AAU team, the Boston Amateur Basketball Club (BABC).
