2012 Veterans Day Classic

It has become tradition that the final lap of the fall AAU schedule be completed at BABC’s Veteran’s Day Classic, and this year’s event was rooted in tradition.  The 21st annual classic celebrated the milestone by returning to two community centers that the program used to call home over 21 years ago when the likes of Patrick Ewing were wearing black and gold, and so the 2012 BABC Veteran’s Day Classic returned to Tobin Community Center and Vine Street Community Center, to host a talented and selective field of New England’s top programs.

BABC alum Rene Castro on his commitment to Butler University

By Brendan Hall | ESPNBoston.com

Worcester Academy senior guard Rene Castro has verbally committed to Butler University for the 2013-14 season, he tweeted earlier tonight.

“Thanks for all of my family and friends who support me I have decided to commit to Butler University to play basketball,” the Milton resident wrote in a tweet tonight.

Castro joins Cushing Academy forward Andrew Chrabascz, a Portsmouth, R.I., native, among the local Class of 2013 products pledging to the Indianapolis school, which is beginning its first season in the Atlantic 10 Conference. Castro and Chrabascz also play for the same AAU team, the Boston Amateur Basketball Club (BABC).

BABC coach Leo Papile to join the 2012 USA Men’s Developmental Basketball team

It was announced by USA Basketball that Boston Amateur Basketball Club (BABC) coach and founder Leo Papile has been named to the coaching staff for the 2012 USA Men’s Developmental Basketball Team.  Papile was selected by the USA Basketball Men’s Developmental National Team Committee last month.

Forty-six of the nation’s top young high school players from the classes of 2015 and 2016 have accepted invitations to attend the USA team’s developmental mini-camp on October 6-7 at the U.S. Olympic Training Center in Colorado Springs, CO. The camp is a training and evaluation session to assemble a team that will compete in the 2013 FIBA Americas U16 Championship in order to qualify for the 2014 FIBA U17 World Championships.

Papile brings years of experience to the USA Basketball staff. At the age of 23, he served as coach of the Quincy Chiefs in the Continental Basketball Association (CBA) from 1977-1978, the youngest professional basketball coach in history.

BABC Alum Tilton’s Wayne Selden commits to Kansas

By Brendan Hall | ESPNBoston.com

ESPN’s Paul Biancardi is reporting this afternoon that Tilton (N.H.) senior swingman and Roxbury native Wayne Selden gave a verbal commitment to the University of Kansas this morning, following an official visit over the weekend to the Lawrence, Kan. campus during the Jayhawks’ annual Midnight Madness celebration.

“It is the right fit for me as a person and a player,” Selden told Biancardi. “When we walked in the arena (for Late Night in the Phog), the roar of the crowd was insane. I was filled with excitement and to a certain extent overwhelmed.”

Selden is currently ranked as the nation’s No. 14 overall senior by ESPNU. He moved back into his original Class of 2013 over the summer; following his freshman season at Roxbury’s O’Bryant High in 2009-10, he transferred to Tilton and re-classified to the 2014 class.
